About

Experience a night of classical guitar like no other! Join us as we journey from the Baroque elegance of Scarlatti’s Sonatas to the romantic depths of Mertz, and Brazilian rhythms of Clarice Assad.

“The strengths of Contra are well established: thoughtful, elegantly shaped phrasing, effortlessly nimble passage work, and a capacity to draw out, and add colour to, harmonic motion.”
– Philip Pogson in The Music Trust

The Contra Guitar Duo, comprising the talented Hamish Strathdee and Emma-Shay Gallenti-Guilfoyle, was formed following their meeting at university auditions in 2011.

They have since performed to international acclaim with performance highlights including the Dubai World Expo, Staatsoper Hamburg, Melbourne Guitar Festival and the Darmstädter Gitarrentage.

Their unique blend of contrasting styles and engaging stage chemistry breathes fresh life into the guitar duo format.

Their goal is simple: to share music that resonates with them and their audiences, bringing to the stage the full spectrum of emotion and expression that two guitars can offer.

Program

Our journey begins with Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonata in E, K.380. Although originally composed for the keyboard, this piece beautifully adapts to the guitar, highlighting Scarlatti’s distinctive Baroque style.

We then delve into the Romantic period with Johann Kaspar Mertz’s “Am Grabe Der Geliebten” and the spirited “Tarantella.” Mertz, renowned for his guitar compositions, captures the essence of 19th-century romanticism, showcasing the guitar’s expressive capabilities.

Moving into the 20th century, Philip Houghton’s “Wave Radiance” offers a glimpse into contemporary guitar music. It has no melody. It is more like a ‘sonic event’, where ‘halos of overtones’ create an atmospheric resonance. At its heart is a stillness, a morphing or transition of colour, texture and dynamic, where the exchange of sonority becomes like a ballet for the players’ hands.

Maria Grenfell’s “Di Primavera,” arranged for the Contra Guitar Duo, is vibrant and full of life, perfectly encapsulates the essence of spring.

Australian composer Ross Edwards contributes “Emily’s Song” and “Djanaba” to the repertoire, blending classical guitar techniques with Australian musical elements to create a unique and captivating soundscape.

The concert also features Alexandre Tansman’s “Variations on a theme by Scriabin.” This was written in 1972 for Andres Segovia, after the Prelude, Op. 16, No. 4 by Alexander Scriabin, and has been masterfully arranged for two guitars by Tilman Hoppstock.

We conclude our evening with Clarice Assad’s “Brasileirinhas,” consisting of “Na Corda Bamba,” “A Moda Antiga,” and “Conversa De Botequim.” These pieces celebrate Brazilian music, adding a lively and rhythmic finale to our journey through the ages.

Join us for an evening that celebrates centuries of musical innovation and the timeless beauty of the classical guitar.
